Warhammer 40,000 4th Edition

4-1-02

Due in a few short years - 2004 at the earliest - Warhammer 40,000 4th edition is just going to be an update to the 3rd edition rules.  Currently these changes are in testing, and so far assault rules have been put out for the general public to playtest and give feedback on.  Vehicle rules are next to be playtested publicly, which won't limit vehicles so much.  The new minor psychic power rules are also being considered for inclusion.  The space for all of these changes is being made by removing the (now out of date) army lists section.  You can find more information at:

Epic 40,000 Remake

4-1-02

Epic 40,000 is being remade into Epic 40,000: Armageddon, centering on the Third War for Armageddon.  The main rules will remain the same, but there are many more rules being added, including Initiative, as well as an upgraded stat line for all of the game's units.  More information can be found here:

New Games?

4-1-02

The design studio is very giddy about the idea of going back to doing a series of games such as the Battle for Armageddon, Doom of the Eldar, and Horus Heresy.  These new games, however, would be closer to Axis and Allies, with small plastic figures rather than card tokens for armies, and would be simple enough to play in under an hour.  Also on the table is a new game along the lines of Space Hulk, which would cover exploration of, among other things, space hulks!  It will mainly feature Space Marines, but depending on popularity it could also see supplements covering all of the major races of 40K.
Eye of Terror: Campaign, Codex, and More

4-1-02

In the summer of 2003, Codex: Eye of Terror will be released, containing rules for armies from the Eye of Terror, as well as the Cadian Imperial Guard regiment.  The Chaos forces in the codex include Cultists, Beastmen, Spawn, mutants, and much more.  Coinciding with this codex's release will be a plastic boxed set for the Cadians in similar fashion to the Catachans.  Also, this will herald the coming of Abaddon's 13th Black Crusade, starting a massive world wide 40K campaign that pits Abaddon and the forces of Chaos against the whole of the Segmentum Pacificus!  Early rumours suggest he may actually take control of the Segmentum, but this is highly speculative.

Codex: Chaos Space Marines Update, and New CSM Models

4-1-02

Codex: Chaos Space Marines is getting a major update, bringing its size to 64 pages, and with it comes many new models.  Mutation rules, rules for every Legion, four major powers that are non-specific to any Chaos god and two that are specific to Tzeentchian Sorcerors, some minor powers, and a lot of updated rules such as Cult Terminators and Daemon Princes will be included.  New models being released include the recent plastic CSM squad, new daemons (to tie in with the new WHFB Chaos book), and a large Chaos engine that is "wacky" according to Andy Chambers but otherwise unknown.  Also the CSMs are getting a new vehicle upgraded named the "Dirge Caster".  Chaos Cultists will not be included.

White Dwarf Armies

4-1-02

In the coming months White Dwarf will contain the following army lists:

  • Word Bearers (268)
  • Raven Guard (270)
  • Alpha Legion (271)
  • Gaunt's Ghost/Tanith First and Only (268)

Gaunt's Ghosts will be getting a command boxed set (including Gaunt, Milo, Corbec, Larkins, and two other famous Ghosts), as well as troopers in blisters.

Also, Elyssian Drop Troops and Savlar Chem Dogs written up by Phil Kelly will be appearing in Chapter Approved.

Epic 40,000 Releases

4-1-02

The new version of E40K's imminent release hasn't slowed down the release schedule for new models.  The E40K range will soon be seeing a complete Tau, a Necron range within the next 18-24 months, and an upcoming Dark Eldar range.  New super heavy vehicles are also being worked on, as well as more terrain and new versions of the Warhound and Reaver Titans.  There will also be more Leman Russ variants released.

Forge World: New 40K Kits

4-1-02

Coming soon from Forge World is a whole slew of new kits, including: Tyranid Harridan, Bunkers, Vindicator, Whirlwind, Rhino Ablative Armour and Doors, Thunderhawk, more super-heavies, Sisters of Battle vehicle conversion kits, more tank aces, a Reaver Titan, more Land Raider variants (inc. one with sponson missile launchers), more Marine air support, and Imperial tank upgrade kits.  The Tau are getting an anti-aircraft variant of the Hammerhead, complete with pulsed markerlight and Seeker Missiles, allowing it to light up its own targets.

Warhammer 40,000 CCG

4-1-02

The Warhammer 40,000 CCG is getting a new setting with the release of the Coronis Campaign.  Also, Games Workshop enjoyed the success of the card game so much they bought majority stock in Sabretooth Games!  You can read about the new setting at:

Upcoming Inquisitor Codices

4-1-02

There's a whole slew of upcoming codices being planned.  The first of them, which is being worked on right now, is Codex: Daemonhunters, which will codex the Ordo Malleus and the Grey Knights chapter of Space Marines.  Coming after it are  Codex: Xenos (Ordo Xenos and the Deathwatch chapter) and Codex: Hereticus (Ordo Hereticus and the Sisters of Battle).  The codices will be backed by new figures, i.e. a Grey Knights Squad (plastic Marines with metal add-ons) and new Inquisitors, an increased line of Deathwatch Marines, and plastic Sisters of Battle.  The Xenos and Hereticus codices are still a ways off.

Forge World Collector's Models

4-1-02

Collector's Models coming up from Forge World that are set in the 40K universe include a Kroot Warrior and a Chaos Space Marine bust.  Also coming is a Bloodquest diorama containing Lysander and Cloten.

Battlefleet Gothic

4-1-02

Battlefleet Gothic is seeing the release of the Dark Eldar and Tau fleets later this year.  Also coming are more ships for the Demiurgs, Necrons, and Tyranids (such as a new Hiveship).  There will also be an Ork battleship released for WD 274.  More Eldar transports and ships are also on the way.

New Inquisitor Models

4-1-02

New models for Inquisitor are coming, a whole slew of them.  These include a Chaos Magus, Krash Thrax (combat servitor), many Imperial Guardsmen, Chaos henchmen mutation sprues, weapons packs, Eldar Ranger, Kroot Warrior, and more.  Exterminatus 2 is already out in some places and should hit your local stores soon.  On Fanatic's wish list are also a Sister of Battle, Renegade Inquisitor, female Inquisitor, and possibly a Terminator of some kind (Loyalist, Chaos, or Inquisitor).  Conversion packs with heads, arms, and extra equipment are in the works.

Upcoming Necromunda Models and Rules

4-1-02

Necromunda's getting a few new models, but not many.  One of the new models is a new Spyrer.  A new gang that has been shrouded in mystery should be released in April or May.  More terrain will be released in June.  Gorkamorka, the Ork skirmish game based on the Necromunda rules, will become a supplement for Necromunda, using the new Necromunda vehicle rules.

More Tau

4-1-02

In addition to the upcoming models from Forge World (including, among other things, more drones and Air Caste pilots), the Tau will be getting one or two more units.  These will be actual Tau units, not allies.  In the future the Tau may get more allies, but not right now.  The Tau will be receiving a vehicle design rules update around WD 271, and will include restrictions such as not allowing close combat weapons on walkers.

New Rhino and Variants

4-1-02

As you should know by now, the new Rhino hits stores coming mid-April.  Razorback and Predator variants will be released within the next two or three months.  Forge World has a Vindicator and Whirlwind model to hold you over until the release of the plastic kits either late this year or early next year.

Codex: Eldar Update

4-1-02

The Eldar will be getting an updated codex some time next year.  The codex will be in the new 64-page format, and will probably have very few changes.  One of the most likely changes, according to Gav Thorpe, is an increase of the Wraithlord's points cost, but no lowering of its Toughness.  Gav has also said he'd like to include the Harlequins and possibly Exodites in the codex, but this may not be possible given the amount of space they would take.  A plastic Wave Serpent should show up around the same time, and there is also the faint possibility of a plastic Storm Guardian kit.

Index Xenos

4-1-02

Index Xenos is currently running a series of articles covering the "main races" of Warhammer 40,000.  However, the design studio hopes to use it to release background on more alien races over time, including a few that will have rules and models for use as mercenaries in the mainstream armies.

Imperial Armour III

4-1-02

Imperial Armour III should be released either later this year or sometime next year.  It will include many of the new Space Marine vehicles, such as the Land Raider Helios and Prometheus, and the Land Speeder Tempest, and may include some Sisters of Battle vehicles as well.

Updated Dark Eldar and Dark Angels Codices

4-1-02

The updated versions of Codex: Dark Eldar and Codex: Dark Angels will be released this June.  Both will include the recent modifications presented online and playtested worldwide.  The Dark Eldar codex will likely become 64 pages and include more background material, and may include the planned Kabal variant lists (these might be placed in WD instead, depending on whether or not they're done at the time of production).

Codex Battlezone: Dark Side

4-1-02

The next book in the Codex Battlezone series will be titled "Dark Side".  It will deal with rules for fighting in zero-g, no atmosphere, and boarding actions on space hulks and space stations.  No word yet on when it may be released.

Redesigned Vehicles

4-1-02

Games Workshop is planning on redesigning the Ork vehicle line sometime in the near future to make it more coherent, in the same way that the Tau, Eldar, and Space Marine vehicles are.  Also, the Leman Russ and Chimera designs are getting close to the 10-year "redesign age", which may mean they'll be modified in the next two to three years.  However, due to the popularity of both of these kits, and the ease of which they can have variants made (shown with the Forge World and basic 40K kits), this may not happen.  The current idea to prevent this is to create a series of modification sprues that will allow for more modification and updating of the looks of the models.

Demiurgs

4-1-02

The official word on Demiurgs is that they will remain a Battlefleet Gothic race for now.  However, if they become quite popular, they may well see the light of day in Warhammer 40,000, after the current range of codices and models lined up is completed.  Demiurgs are being seen as a replacement for Squats by the players, but no designer will comment on this, at least officially.

Updated Imperial Guard Codex

4-1-02

Also in the line of revamped codices is the Imperial Guard codex, set for a release in the spring or summer of 2003.  The codex will add an experience system to the IG, allowing you to take anything from newbies to experienced veterans.  This will also coincide somewhat with the release of Codex: Eye of Terror and the plastic Cadian boxed set.

Cursed Founding

4-1-02

The Cursed Founding is going to be an upcoming Index Astartes article, which will include more background on the Founding and the chapters created at the time, such as the Fire Hawks which became the Legion of the Damned.  Rules for creating your own Cursed Founding chapter of Space Marines will also be included, so that not everyone has to use Legion of the Damned rules.

Renegade Space Marines

4-1-02

White Dwarf will be including an article in a few months containing an army list for Renegade Space Marine armies.  This list will be used for making armies of Space Marines that have turned to Chaos, such as the Astral Claw, aka Red Corsairs.  It will be supplemented with a Chaos Razorback model, and will basically be an Imperial Space Marine list that has the ability to take Marks and Gifts of Chaos, as well as some rules covering mutations, possession, daemons, and the like.
Books of the Astronomican

7-5-01

The upcoming Codex: Chapter Approved s subtitled The Second Book of the Astronomican, and for good reason. Games Workshop plans to release future compilations of Chapter Approved articles and updated 40K material annually, titling each a Book of the Astronomican. The next book, coming in 2002, is The Third Book of the Astronomican, then The Fourth Book of the Astronomican in 2003, and so on.
Index Astartes

7-5-01

Index Astartes will be published in the next few issues of White Dwarf until it reaches the end of the First Foundings, after which it will be taking a break. The First Founding articles will be published in an upcoming supplement titled Index Astartes: First Founding, with further Index Astartes volumes coming when IA picks up again in WD. While Index Astartes is on break, Index Xenos will be taking its place, with articles covering the background of the alien races in the 40K universe.   These articles will also be making an appearance in an upcoming volume title Index Xenos (of course).
Updated Codices

7-5-01

According to the designers, 40K will be received updated codices in the semi-near futures, as soon as all of the 'major' codices are finished. First among these will be the Space Marines, Chaos Space Marines, and Dark Eldar. These updates will fix some wording, update rules to match the latest interpretations and changes, and update or add army selections (such as the new rules for Chaos Daemon Princes, Cultists, and Cult Terminators). The mini-dexes will be redone as well, eliminating the need for a 'parent' codex. The main codices will all be increased to 64 pages in size, with the 'mini-dexes' becoming 48 pages.
Sisters of Battle

7-5-01

While the Sisters of Battle have recently received an update to thier army list in the upcoming Codex Chapter Approved, that is all they'll be getting in the near future. The Sisters have been put on the back burner "indefinitely", due to a lack of ideas for their future development. Games Workshop's designers are concerned about the appearance the Sisters have as weak female Space Marines, and so they will be doing all they can to change this image. For now, the CA army list should help, as first reports from gamers using it indicate that the list is pretty good, with a small weakness in HTH fighting.
Forgeworld Future Releases

7-5-01

There are a lot of upcoming releases from Forge World. First up is the upcoming Imperial Armour II, available for purchase  later this month. Models scaled for 40K include a new Dark Eldar flyer, the Eldar Phoenix and Vampire, a Chimera Interior kit, two Thunderhawks (Rhino transport and 30-Marine Transport), Chaos Marine drop pods, and even a Warlord Titan with a very detailed head and a separate fiber-optics kit. The Collector Series models will soon include an Ork Nob in Mega-Armour.  Some urban terrain is also being produced to go with the release of Cityfight.
Inquisitor Releases

7-5-01

Upcoming releases for Inquisitor are being done by Fanatic.  The next models line up for release include a Chrono Warrior, a Valhallan, a Cadian, Simeon 38 (Arcoflagellant), another Deacon (Ecclesiarchy character), Emmissary Fabian (Mutant), Krashrak the Stalker, and the Warhammer Monthly stars Kal Jerico and Scabbs.
New Psychic Powers in 40K4

6-29-01

It appears the new psychic powers will be seen in the 40K4 rulebook.  Says Andy Chambers:

"Thanks for the vote of confidence, I'm very interested to see how these rules settle in to 40K as they haven't been as heavily tested as I would like, so some player feedback will be great! All going well they will be included in the next edition of the 40K rules."

Warhammer 40,000 4th Edition

6-27-01

Warhammer 40,000 4th Edition is currently being worked on by Games Workshop.  It will simply be an updated version of the 3rd edition rules, with all of the current codices being usable.  There are going to be a few changes, based on the reaction to some polls run by GW testing the gamers' thoughts on rules changes.
Dan Abnett Novels

6-27-01

Dan Abnett, author of the Gaunt's Ghosts novels, has quite a few books lined up for release:
  • Eisenhorn #3: Hereticus (Spring 2002)
  • Gaunt's Ghosts #5: Guns of Tanith (May 2002)

Games Workshop Intellectual Property - A Fair Warning

01-11-01

A bit of news for the 40K website owners out there, and anyone thinking of starting a 40K website.  Games Workshop has decided that they will no longer allow websites to display Chapter Approved material, as they will be putting it up on their sites now.  If you have this material on your site, you should probably remove it ASAP.  Games Workshop's legal team will be searching out sites that use their images or material, so it would be best for everyone to remove it.

For those of you who have seen it, Bile's Paper Rhino site has been shut down because of the new approach to sites with Games Workshop's intellectual property.  This should be enough of a warning for some.
