Why the +1 rank bonus for the cavalry??
In the standard rules cavalry don't get a rank bonus, mainly to reflect their lack of effectiveness against formed infantry. As time went along, the introduction of things like stirrups and larger horses made cavalry more effective against infantry, which is represented (in this case) by allowing Norman cavalry a rank bonus of up to +1.
