This army list covers the Graeco-Bactrian Kingdom and armies from the 250BC to 130BC. Bactria was a state lying in what is now Northern Afghanistan, parts of Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and the southeastern area of Turkmenistan. This is the kingdom of Bactria that grew up by the installation of Graeco-Macedonian troops as colonists by Alexander during the period between 330 and 327BC. The area was under the control of the Seleucids for approximately half a century before it broke away to become an independent kingdom. The army combines the best of the Bactrian cavalry tradition with the Graeco-Macedonian pike phalanx, the heavy cavalry combines both elements of Macedonian cavalry traditions and Bactrian cavalry traditions. These heavy cavalry were backed by a well-trained infantry fighting in pike phalanx, and light horse archers and light infantry skirmishers. The kingdom also made regular use of elephants in its army. This list can also be used to represent a Graeco-Indian army from 170BC to 55BC.
Army Composition | Special Rules
Characters | Cavalry | Infantry
Special Troops and Allies
Characters: The army may have a general and may have an army standard
bearer.
Cavalry: At least a quarter of the points value of the army.
Infantry: Up to half of the points value of the army.
Allies: Up to a quarter of the points value of the army.
The minimum size for a regiment is five infantry models or three chariot models. There is no upper limit. One model in each unit may be upgraded to Leader (+5 points), Standard Bearer (+5 points), and Musician (+5 points).
Wedge Formation
Many of the cavalry units in Alexander's army fought in 'arrowhead' or 'rhomboid' wedge formations that were highly maneaouvrable and effective in close combat. To represent this shock cavalry units drawn from the army list that have from five to ten models may fight in a wedge formation. A Wedge has one model in the first rank, two in the second, and so on. While in wedge formation the following rules apply:
The units' front, flank and rear arcs are based on the models in the rear rank of the unit.
As long as at least one model in the unit is in contact with the enemy, then all models in the unit may fight, even if they are not in base contact with the enemy. However, for every two unengaged models in wedge that this allows to fight, one enemy model that is in a unit touching the wedge but not in base contact may fight. This rule represents the wedge 'punching' into the enemy formation and turning the combat into s swirling melee. It applies even if the wedge is charged, it being assumed that the wedge would counter-charge to some extent.
Phalanxs
Alexander's pikemen fought in a special formation called a phalanx. To represent this, as long as they are in a unit of at least 16 models and have a rank bonus of at least +1, then the following special rules apply, in addition to the special rules that apply to pikes. As soon as a phalanx is reduced to less than 16 models or looses its rank bonus (including when attacked in flank or rear) then the following rules no longer apply.
Cavalry may not charge the front of a phalanx.
Models in a phalanx may charge and still fight in two ranks.
All enemy attacks (shooting and hand-to-hand) at the front of a phalanx suffer a -1 to hit modifier.
Used to Elephants
All troops in a Graeco-Bactrian/Graeco-Indian army are 'used to elephants'. This means that infantry do not fear elephants at all, while cavalry and chariots only only fear them rather than being terrified.
Expert Horse Archers
Bactrian and Saka Horse Archers are expert horse archers and take no minuses for moving and shooting.
