This list is meant to approximate Roman armies from after the reforms of Camillus to those attributed to Marius. It should therefore be suitable for the Latin wars, the Samnite/Umbrian/Gallic war, the Pyhrric war, the Punic wars, and the Macedonian and Antigonid wars. Although this is a long period, the basic troop types remain about the same. Their relative numbers and role on the battlefield does change, so players should use the list to design an army appropriate to the era they are playing. Note that in some cases maxima have not been included, nor are there separate entries for all possible allied nationalities. This is to allow flexibility in list creation and players should be able to model the type of allies that they desire. Where possible, notes are included in the list to help. Options are included for the use of spears by principes, which may have been the case early on but open for debate.
ARMY COMPOSITION| Characters |
The army must have a general and an army standard bearer. Other characters may be included. |
| Cavalry | Up to a quarter of the point value of the army. |
| Infantry | At least half of the points value of the army. |
| Allies | Up to a quarter of the points value of the army. |
The minimum size for a unit is five infantry models or one bolt shooter model. There is no upper limit except as defined in the list below. One model in each unit must be upgraded to Leader (+5 points), one to Standard Bearer (+5 points), with a Musician optional (+5 points).
Special RulesRoman Triarii (and Principes if armed with thrusting spears) may fight in PHALANX. To represent this, as long as they are in a unit of at least 16 models and have a rank bonus of at least +1, then the following special rules apply, in addition to the special rules that apply to pikes. As soon as a phalanx is reduced to less than 16 models or loses its rank bonus (including when attacked in flank or rear) then the following rules no longer apply.
Roman Triarii (and Principes if armed with thrusting spears for earlier armies) may open ranks to let friendly units pass through. Use the same pass through rule as for elephants and chariots. Units being passed through may not move or charge in the turn in which units pass them. If a unit has passed through the Triarii/Principe unit which is charged by a unit no more than half a charge move distant, then the phalanx rules will not apply in the ensuing combat. This charge must take place in the turn following the pass through move.
